It’s a Busy Day for Frankel

Share

The Wood Memorial isn’t the only graded stakes trainer Bobby Frankel will be trying to win today at Aqueduct.

Frankel, who is making a habit of winning Eclipse Awards as the nation’s top trainer, will send out Special Rate in the $150,000 Bay Shore before Empire Maker runs in the Wood, then, after the Wood is over, Frankel will try to win the $350,000 Carter with Aldebaran.

Owned and bred by Juddmonte Farms, Special Rate, a half-brother to the stakes-winning fillies Tates Creek and Sightseek, will make his stakes debut in the seven-furlong, Grade III Bay Shore. He will be ridden by Jerry Bailey against a field that includes the Bob Baffert-trained During, Halo Homewrecker and unbeaten Don Six.

Aldebaran, who also will be ridden by Bailey, will be looking for back-to-back Grade I victories against Peeping Tom, who won the 2001 Carter, Congaree, Affirmed Success, the defending champion, and Papua.

Race of the day: Singletary, who has proven he needs the turf to do his best running, will be favored in the $150,000 La Puente Stakes at one mile. The race is the fourth leg of the pick six, which has a carryover of $139,858.

Who’s hot: David Vance. The trainer is in the top five in the standings entering the final day of the Oaklawn Park meet, winning at a 24% clip.

Who’s not: Tim Martin. The Oaklawn-based trainer lost with 62 of his first 65 starters in 2003.

Exotically speaking: A pick three using Heat Of The Moment and Julie’s Go Baby Go in the second, singling Guaritta in the third and using Nlotsabutter, Annie N Me, Midterm Habit, Proud Nicole and Friendly Gal in the fourth.

Winners: Previous day/meet total: 2/225. Money: Previous day/meet total: $10.80/$1,270. Total money bet: $1,340.
