Hahn Reports $400,000 Collected for Campaign

Nearly two years before voters go to the polls, Los Angeles Mayor James K. Hahn has already raised more than $400,000 toward his reelection campaign, according to finance statements filed Thursday.

“Obviously, you have to be very pleased with the results so far,” said Hahn advisor Bill Wardlaw. “I think it reflects people’s view that he has done an outstanding job and that he will be reelected.”

So far, Hahn is the only candidate who has officially signaled his intention to run.

Political analysts said the amount was intended to send a message to any potential opponents that the mayor will be well funded.

“You just want people to freak out,” said political consultant Joe Cerrell. “You want people to say, ‘Oh my God, he has more in the bank than I’ll be able to raise through election day.’ ”

In his 2001 race, Hahn raised $3.7 million in the primary election and $2 million in the general election.

To meet the goal of raising $750,000 by year’s end, Hahn backers scheduled a number of fund-raisers in recent weeks not reflected on the campaign statements, including several put on by airport contractors.
