Mariucci, Lions Get Win in First Exhibition

Joey Harrington threw a 13-yard touchdown pass to Scotty Anderson in the final seconds of the first half to give Detroit the lead, and the Lions beat the Pittsburgh Steelers, 26-13, Saturday at Detroit to give Coach Steve Mariucci a victory in his first exhibition game with the team.

Mariucci, fired by San Francisco after going 60-43 in six seasons, replaced Marty Mornhinweg, who was fired by the Lions after going 5-27 in two seasons.

San Francisco 24, Kansas City 6 -- Rookie Ken Dorsey threw two touchdown passes at Kansas City to help the 49ers win their first exhibition game under new Coach Dennis Erickson.

Tim Rattay, who started at quarterback while Jeff Garcia rested his ailing back, completed eight of nine passes for 90 yards and a touchdown.

Arizona 13, Dallas 0 -- Emmitt Smith made a cameo appearance against his old team and the Cowboys were shut out in Bill Parcells’ first exhibition game as coach at Tempe, Ariz.

The NFL’s all-time rushing leader carried for no gain on the game’s first play. Then on third-and-10, he took a pass from Jeff Blake and dodged a couple of Cowboys for an 11-yard gain and a first down.

Jacksonville 16, Minnesota 14 -- Ike Charlton returned a fumble 97 yards for a first-half touchdown at Minneapolis to help the Jaguars win Coach Jack Del Rio’s first exhibition game.

Chicago 20, Indianapolis 18 -- Rex Grossman, a first-round draft choice from Florida, drove the Bears 50 yards in the final 2:39 and Paul Edinger kicked a 38-yard field goal as time expired at Champaign, Ill.

Carolina 20, Washington 0 -- Stephen Davis, released last winter after seven seasons in Washington, helped the Panthers win at Charlotte, N.C. He didn’t score but had a 34-yard gain in his second carry. In all, he gained 74 yards in seven carries.

Denver 20, Houston 12 -- Jake Plummer, who landed in Denver after six seasons with the Arizona Cardinals, threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to Chris Cole to help the Broncos win at Houston.

Buffalo 20, Baltimore 19 -- Antonio Brown returned a punt 87 yards for a touchdown with 3:19 left at Baltimore. Kyle Boller threw a 26-yard touchdown pass to Randy Hymes with 23 seconds left, but the two-point conversion pass failed.

Green Bay 27, Atlanta 21 -- Michael Vick, playing only the first quarter at Atlanta, completed six of seven passes for 110 yards, including a 43-yard touchdown pass to Brian Finneran, but the Falcons lost.

Tennessee 10, Cleveland 6 -- Eddie George ran for a touchdown and Joe Nedney kicked a 22-yard field goal as the Titans held off the Browns at Nashville in their exhibition opener.

Seattle 20, San Diego 7 -- Matt Hasselbeck completed six of his first seven passes and finished with eight completions in 11 attempts for 75 yards as the Seahawks won at Seattle.

Willis McGahee and the Buffalo Bills are close to a deal, the first-round pick’s agent said after a two-hour meeting with team President Tom Donahoe. Once McGahee signs, the Bills are expected to place him on the physically unable to perform list or the non-football injury list.... Tight end Jeremy Shockey of the New York Giants apologized for making reported derogatory comments about Parcells, insisting his words were in jest.
