Mater Dei Wins Irvine Tournament

Marcel Jones made his first four shots and finished with 26 points and 10 rebounds Saturday night to lead Santa Ana Mater Dei to a 79-55 victory over Redondo in the championship game of the Irvine tournament.

Mater Dei (10-1) played without 6-foot-9 Chris Henry, who missed the game because of a sprained ankle. Corey Sigel had 20 points for Redondo (5-3).

David Avalos of Covina was named the lower-weight most valuable wrestler and North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake’s Kenji Porter earned the same distinction among the upper weights while Rosemead won the team competition in the West Coast Classic at Rosemead High.

The Panthers scored a meet-high 178 points. Riverside La Sierra was second with 162 1/2 points. North Torrance finished third with 153 points.

Avalos, who competed at 130 pounds, finished with three falls, one technical fall and one major decision. Porter, wrestling at 215, had four falls and a major decision.

Santa Ana Calvary Chapel and Temecula Valley each finished among the top-10 teams at another tournament in Reno.

Calvary Chapel finished sixth and Temecula Valley 10th in the two-day competition, which featured 87 teams.

David Jauregui, who won the 140-pound title with a 6-0 record, including a pin and four technical falls, led Calvary Chapel.

The Eagles also got fourth-place finishes from Justin Paulson (103), Brian Osuna (119) and Patrick Aleksanyan (135).

Temecula Valley’s David Navarrete placed third in the 103-pound division after going 6-1 with four falls and a major decision.

Orange Lutheran High senior receiver-linebacker Anthony Vernaglia and Ventura St. Bonaventure senior running back-defensive back Terrail Lambert have been selected to the West roster of the 2004 U.S. Army All-American Bowl, which is scheduled for Jan. 3 in San Antonio.
