From Times Wire Reports

Aggressive dogs are an on-the-job hazard for gas meter readers.

Pacific Gas and Electric Co. has mounted a public education campaign, asking dog owners to keep their pets inside when meter readers are in the neighborhood.

The utility said Saturday its meter readers were attacked by dogs 45 times in 2003, a drop of 20 attacks from the 65 last year.

Meter readers often must dodge pit bulls and outfox Rottweilers to make their appointed rounds, company officials said.

To make life a little safer for the meter readers, PG&E; has stuffed schedules inside more than 1 million monthly bills.
