Deputies stopped a Blue Line train late Thursday in Long Beach as they searched for as many as four people who reportedly had been robbing passengers.

The Sheriff’s Department received a call at 9:18 p.m., as the train passed through Compton, reporting that a group of robbers was accosting people, said sheriff’s Lt. Ernie Gjendem.

Deputies tried to stop the train at the Del Amo Boulevard station in Rancho Dominguez, but were unable to, Gjendem said.

The train, carrying about 60 people, was finally stopped at Wardlow Road. Dozens of deputies and Long Beach police quickly surrounded the train and began ordering those aboard to exit with their hands up.

Gjendem said that as of 10:30 p.m., two suspects had been detained, but he still didn’t know how many robbers had been involved or whether they had weapons.

“Usually, it’s a strong-arm robbery where two or three guys gang up on one person, take jewelry and the like,” he said.
