Janevia Taylor scored 25 points, including the winning jumper with three seconds left, to complete San Bernardino’s 35-34 victory over Huntington Beach Edison in a Southern Section Division II-AA girls’ basketball second-round game.

San Bernardino (19-8), ranked No. 21 in the Southland by The Times, outscored No. 22 Edison, 11-1, in the last four minutes of the game.

Taylor scored 11 points in the fourth quarter, but made only 10 of 31 shots in the game.

San Bernardino was only eight of 46 from the field going into the fourth quarter, when it trailed 28-21. The Cardinals made six of 15 shots in the final eight minutes.

“As soon as we got to within three points, I knew we had them,” Coach Paul Akahoshi said. “We have a go-to player. That’s the difference between teams that know they can win and teams that think they can win.”

Taylor’s winning shot came after an Edison turnover with 16 seconds left. Taylor took an inbounds pass at half court, dribbled into the lane and pulled up for an eight-foot jumper over a defender.

“I was going to attack the basket. I was going to take the shot all right,” Taylor said when asked if she thought about dishing off.

Rebecca Kepilino had 11 points and 12 rebounds and Eva Camarena added 10 points for Edison (21-6).

In girls’ water polo:

Los Alamitos 5, Long Beach Wilson 4 -- Los Alamitos Coach Dave Carlson borrowed a technique from professional football and it turned out to be a key ingredient Saturday in the Griffins’ upset of Long Beach Wilson at the USA Water Polo National Aquatics Center in Los Alamitos.

The score was knotted, 3-3, with 4:37 left in the third quarter when Wilson’s Lauren Silver was awarded a penalty shot. Carlson called time out. When play resumed, Los Alamitos goalkeeper Sarah Kilgore got a hand on Silver’s shot as it headed toward the right corner and it deflected off the crossbar.

That inspired the Griffins, who went on to take a two-goal lead that they held until 1:23 remained when Silver cut the deficit in half. Robyn Kaake scored the go-ahead goal and Jessica Lewis scored the fifth and final goal for Los Alamitos.

Carlson said he’d seen NFL coaches call timeouts to ice kickers. But more importantly, he said, he wanted to talk to Kilgore.

“Honestly, I guessed where the shot was going to go,” Carlson said. “We needed a timeout to regroup anyway because they were getting good offensive shots on us.”

Wilson Coach Tony Martinho credited the win to Kilgore, who finished with 15 saves.
