Eight From Southland to Compete in Canada

Lionel Larry of Compton Dominguez High and MacKenzie Hill, a recent graduate of Long Beach Wilson, head a list of eight athletes from the Southland who will compete in the World Youth (under 18) track and field championships at Sherbrooke, Canada, from Wednesday through Sunday.

Larry, who won the boys’ 200 meters in the state championships June 7, will run in that event and might also compete in the 400 or 1,600 relay.

Hill, winner of the girls’ 300 low hurdles in the state championships, will run in the 400 hurdles.

Michael Haddan of Irvine Woodbridge, Kyle Hammerquist of Claremont Webb and Eddie Cornell of Ridgecrest Burroughs are other entrants from the region in the boys’ meet.

Haddan, third in the 800 in the state championships, will run in that event. Hammerquist and Cornell are entered in the discus.

Among other entries in the girls’ meet are Domenique Manning of Riverside North in the 100 high hurdles, Gayle Hunter of Riverside North in the heptathlon and DeAna Carson of Moreno Valley Vista del Lago in the long jump.

Larry, Haddan, Hammerquist, Cornell, Manning and Hunter will be seniors in the fall and Carson will be a sophomore.
