Galaxy Gets Tie in South Korea

Share

Halfway around the world, the Galaxy still felt as if it were the home team Wednesday at Jeonju, South Korea, in its first game at the Peace Cup.

They can thank South Korean defender Hong Myung-Bo for that, but it didn’t translate to a victory. The Galaxy tied Nacional of Uruguay, 0-0, before 23,000 fans, most of whom were there to support Hong, a South Korea World Cup veteran.

“We definitely felt the crowd giving us some energy,” said Galaxy midfielder Sasha Victorine, who rattled a left-footed shot off the post in the 39th minute for one of the Galaxy’s best chances in a game it dominated.

The Galaxy even played the last 20 minutes with a man advantage after Nacional’s Gustavo Techera was shown his second yellow card for a reckless foul.

Still, L.A. couldn’t find the net. Victorine, Simon Elliott and Alejandro Moreno all had shots in the final minutes that were either barely off the mark or turned away by Nacional goalkeeper Gustavo Munua.

In the other group game, Dutch club PSV Eindhoven knocked off 1860 Munich of Germany, 4-2.

The Galaxy plays 1860 Munich on Friday at Daejon.
