Breakers Beat Freedom

Maren Meinert scored two first-half goals and the Boston Breakers defeated the Washington Freedom, 3-1, in front of 6,801 Sunday in a Women’s United Soccer Assn. game at Washington.
Meinert has a league-leading eight goals for the Breakers (5-3-2), who took over first place in the WUSA from the Freedom (5-2-1).
The Freedom scored in the 49th minute when Steffi Jones took a corner kick from Mia Hamm and flicked the ball off her head past goalkeeper Karina LeBlanc.
New York 2, San Jose 0 -- Margaret Tietjen and Emily Janss each scored a goal in front of 6,002 at San Jose as the Power (4-5) beat the CyberRays (4-5) for the first time.
