BOYS’ SWIMMING

Irvine held off Newport Harbor to win its ninth consecutive Sea View League title Friday. The Vaqueros were too deep in the second-to-last event, the 100 breaststroke, turning a 42.5-point deficit into a 17.5-point lead, and held on to win, 523.5 to 516. Look for a different story this Friday at the Southern Section Division I finals, where Newport Harbor senior Andrew Cole should score some big points. Cole was the top competitor at the league final, winning the 200 individual medley in 1 minute 59.11 seconds and the 100 backstroke in 54.05.

GIRLS’ SWIMMING

No surprises at the Sea View League finals Friday. Irvine scored 489 points to defeat Newport Harbor (417), Santa Ana Foothill (314) and Laguna Hills (257). It also wasn’t surprising that the time of the day belonged to Peirsol. Only this time it was Newport Harbor’s Hayley Peirsol, not her world-record holding brother, Aaron, who graduated last year. Hayley posted a time of 4:40.41 in the 500 freestyle, surpassing the meet record of 4:51.11 set four years ago by Olympic bronze medalist Kaitlin Sandeno of Lake Forest El Toro.

BOYS’ TRACK AND FIELD

Long Beach Poly had several noteworthy performances in the Moore League finals Friday, including Rodney Van’s winning marks of 48.4 seconds in the 400 meters and 22 feet 7 inches in the long jump, but they weren’t enough to help the Jackrabbits overtake Compton Dominguez in the rankings that are based on a hypothetical meet involving all of the Southland’s top performers. Bellflower St. John Bosco vaults back into the top 10 after Joe Cowan won the 400 in 47.9 and the 300 intermediate hurdles in 38.92 in the Serra League finals. Pasadena Muir makes its first appearance behind the hurdling of Marquis Profit.

Shalonda Solomon, who has been instrumental in Long Beach Poly’s hold on the No. 1 ranking all season, was credited with hand-held, wind-aided times of 11.1 seconds in the 100 meters and 22.5 in the 200 in the league finals. But the inconsistency of hand timing makes it difficult to tell how fast she really ran. Irvine Woodbridge returns to the top 10 after senior Michelle Sanford won the long jump at 18 feet 1 inch and the triple jump at 40-9 1/2 in the Sea View League finals.

League individual tournaments are going on this week, but some ranked teams posted significant victories last week. North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake, which is on a 14-match winning streak, rallied from a 4-2 first-round deficit to win, 10-8, in a nonleague match against No. 6 Brentwood. Fullerton Troy picked up its second victory of the season over league rival Fullerton Sunny Hills, and Woodland Hills El Camino Real easily advanced to its fourth consecutive City Section title match with victories over Sun Valley Poly and Eagle Rock.

San Clemente owned the top spot for only one week before handing it back to Los Angeles Loyola after the Tritons lost to Dana Point Dana Hills in a South Coast League match. Westlake Village Westlake and Simi Valley shared the Marmonte League title. Injury-riddled Corona del Mar dropped out of the rankings after a four-game nonleague loss to its cross-town rival, resurgent Newport Harbor. Only matches to five games count in overall records.
