Former USC quarterback and nine-year pro Rob Johnson signed with Oakland on Tuesday, providing depth for the Raiders at the position.

Johnson, a backup with Tampa Bay last season, played two games with Washington this season before being cut.

To make room for Johnson on the roster, the Raiders released kick returner Ronney Jenkins.

Rick Mirer is expected to start for the Raiders against the New York Jets on Sunday. Rich Gannon will sit out at least two more weeks because of a shoulder injury and backup Marques Tuiasosopo is out because of a knee injury.

A judge in Florida ruled that a female athletic trainer’s defamation lawsuit can proceed against Indianapolis quarterback Peyton Manning and his father, Archie, a former NFL quarterback.

The case stems from a 1996 encounter in which Peyton Manning dropped his pants in front of former University of Tennessee trainer Jamie Ann Naughright.

Manning mentioned the incident in the book he wrote with his father, “Manning: A Father, His Sons and a Football Legacy.”

Naughright filed the lawsuit in 2002, two years after the book was published, saying it disparaged her. She is seeking at least $15,000.
