Devils Win and Extend Streak to 11

The New Jersey Devils are finding new ways to keep their unbeaten streak alive.

After blowout victories over the Buffalo Sabres and the New York Rangers, the Devils pulled out a 2-1 overtime victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Friday night at East Rutherford, N.J., to extend the streak to 11.

The Penguins are tied with Washington with an NHL-low 11 points.

Patrick Elias scored the game-winning goal -- his second goal of the game -- 39 seconds into overtime.

He took a pass in his own end from Brian Rafalski and skated to the Penguin zone. He used Pittsburgh defenseman Drake Berehowsky as a screen to beat rookie Marc-Andre Fleury.

Atlanta 6, Florida 3 -- Shawn McEachern had two goals, and Ilya Kovalchuk scored his NHL-leading 15th to lead the Thrashers at Sunrise, Fla.

The Thrashers, who have won three in a row, scored twice on the power play, and twice short-handed.

McEachern, who has only three goals this season, scored to give Atlanta leads of 1-0 and 5-3. Kovalchuk also had two assists, giving him 27 points.

Buffalo 5, Carolina 0 -- Mika Noronen made 35 saves for his third career shutout, and J.P. Dumont had two goals at Buffalo, N.Y. Johan Hecht, Alex Kotalik and Chris Drury scored during a 10:59 span in the second period.

The Hurricanes have been outscored, 8-0, in the second period of their last two games. Ottawa scored five goals in the second period of Thursday’s 6-1 victory.

Former King Jamie Storr, making his fifth start of the season, gave up the five goals in 25 shots.

San Jose 5, Phoenix 0 -- Marco Sturm and Mike Ricci scored on the Sharks’ first two power plays at Phoenix.

Alyn McCauley, Vincent Damphousse and Brad Stuart also had goals for the Sharks, who have an NHL-high eight ties -- one off their 2002-03 total.

San Jose needed the win just to tie Pittsburgh for fewest victories in the NHL -- four.
