Newbury Park Woman Fatally Stabbed

A Newbury Park woman was stabbed to death early Wednesday inside the home of an elderly couple who rented a room to the victim and the man arrested on suspicion of killing her, police said.

Sheriff’s detectives said the stabbing occurred after an argument between the woman and man. Authorities arrested Angeles Domingo, 37, the victim’s husband, at the scene. A motive for the slaying has not been determined. The woman had been stabbed multiple times with a knife, according to the Ventura County medical examiner’s office.

The name of the woman was being withheld until her family is notified, said Eric Nishimoto, spokesman for the Ventura County’s Sheriff’s Department.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene when police arrived shortly before 5 a.m. in the 700 block of Malat Drive, the longtime home of Robert Gammon, 82, and his wife, Alice Gammon, 77.

Residents on the street of one-story, single-family homes said arguments had occasionally erupted between Robert Gammon and a man in his 20s or 30s who rented a room from them.

Neighbor Maya Madison said the two fought because the man reportedly was not keeping up his end of the rental agreement, which required him to maintain the Gammons’ yard. Madison said she had learned about the arguments from a neighbor who lives next door to the Gammons.

Madison said she believed the suspect worked as a tree trimmer.

Authorities said the Gammons were not injured in the incident, and neighbors said they saw the couple leaving their home about 7:30 a.m. Wednesday in their car.

Neighbors said the Gammons have lived in the house for at least 40 years and raised two children there, and that Robert Gammon was known to hand out candy to children walking to the nearby elementary school.

But in recent years the couple mostly remained indoors. Their frontyard had become unkempt and their flowerbeds were overtaken with weeds, neighbor Toni Bronson said.

“They were a very reclusive couple,” Bronson said.

“After their kids moved out, you never saw them anymore. I thought she [Alice] had died because I hadn’t seen her in years, until a couple of weeks ago.”
