CBS snags 2004 Latin Grammys
The fifth annual Latin Grammy Awards have been picked up for broadcast in the fall of 2004 by CBS.
The renewal reflects improved ratings for the show, which some considered doomed after a viewer slump in 2002, its third year. This September’s telecast on CBS drew an audience of 4.96 million viewers, about 1.12 million more than the previous outing.
A big battle still lies ahead for the world’s premiere Latin music showcase: picking the host city. The awards moved this year from Los Angeles to Miami, where anti-Castro forces continued to oppose the presence of Cuba-based artists, who were all prevented from attending by visa problems. Willie Colon, the Puerto Rican salsa-star-turned-politician, is lobbying for the show to go to New York.
