U.S. Debut for Angisse

Share

Trainer Elliott Walden, who will try to win a Breeders’ Cup race with Tiger Hunt in the Juvenile on Saturday, will be trying for a lesser prize with another 2-year-old today at Keeneland.

Angisse, an English-bred daughter of Fasliyev, will make her U.S. debut in the $100,000 Jessamine County, an ungraded race at 1 1/16 miles on the turf.

Owned by WinStar Farm LLC, Angisse began her career by finishing third in an allowance race going five furlongs at Maisons-Laffitte on May 6, then returned three weeks later to win an allowance at a mile at Chantilly.

Trained at Churchill Downs for his first for Walden, Angisse will race with Lasix for the first time and break from the inside post in the field of 12 under jockey Larry Melancon.

The only two-time turf winner among the dozen is Galloping Gal. A daughter of Victory Gallop trained by Ken McPeek for owner William Carl, she won at 7-1 in her debut at Saratoga on Aug. 15, then came back less than a month later to prevail as the 7-10 favorite over the tricky course at Kentucky Downs.

Race of the day: Expresso Bay, who has won four consecutive races on the grass at Hollywood Park and Del Mar, will make his first start for trainer Ted H. West in today’s seventh at Santa Anita. Martin Pedroza will keep the mount on the 6-year-old Metfield gelding in the $53,000 optional claimer at one mile on the turf. Other contenders include Vacamonte, Investor’s Dream and Buckland Manor.

One for the road: Statement broke his maiden in his first U.S. start for top trainer Christophe Clement and should be hard to handle right back in today’s eighth at Belmont Park. The 3-year-old Singspiel colt is meeting a bunch of proven losers in the $48,000 allowance at 1 3/8 miles.

Exotically speaking: A pick three using Victoria’s Garden and Continental Wine in the first, Place to Hide and Time Honored in the second and single Taliano in the third.

Winners: Previous day/meet total: 2/50. Money: Previous day/meet total: $8/$257.80. Total money bet: $308.
