Thomas Weber kicked a 37-yard field goal in the second overtime to lift Los Angeles Loyola to a 31-28 victory over Santa Ana Mater Dei in a Serra League game Saturday at Santa Ana Stadium.

After trading touchdowns on their first alternating possessions in overtime, the Monarchs were stopped short on fourth and two at the 17-yard line. Weber, who missed an extra-point attempt and field-goal tries from 43 and 51 yards, kicked the game winner for the Cubs (4-3, 1-1) four plays later.

Mater Dei (3-4, 1-1), ranked No. 18 in the Southland by The Times, fumbled twice inside Loyola’s five-yard line. The first turnover came on the opening drive of the game. The second came with the Monarchs driving for the go-ahead touchdown with 3:02 to play.

Mistakes also hurt Loyola, ranked No. 21 by The Times.

A roughing-the-passer penalty on a failed fake punt resulted in a first down, and Mater Dei then went on to score on a one-yard run by Justin Guzman that cut Loyola’s lead to 13-7 with 1:44 left in the first half.

Mater Dei quarterback Jason Forcier gained 106 of his 181 rushing yards in the fourth quarter. He scored on a nine yard run to tie the score at 21 with 5:57 left in regulation.

Serra 23, Cathedral 10 -- Ryan Kelley rushed for 136 yards and a touchdown in 18 carries against his former school in a Serra League game at Cathedral.

Kelley and teammate Emmanuel Robinson both transferred from Cathedral to Serra after their sophomore years. On Saturday, the two seniors did much of the damage as the Cavaliers (5-2, 2-0) handed the Phantoms (4-3, 0-2) their first defeat on their home field since a 21-16 loss to Santa Ana Calvary Chapel in the second week of the 1997 season.

Robinson, a 5-10, 225-pound senior, finished with 32 yards in seven carries.

“It’s great to be here and great to get a win here,” said Kelley, who fumbled on his second carry but was solid thereafter. “The intensity is high when I play these guys, like I have something to prove. And today I felt like I proved it.”

Kelley broke loose for Serra’s first touchdown on a 43-yard run that gave the Cavaliers a 10-0 lead with 5:55 to go in the second quarter.
