From Times Staff Reports

Moreno Valley Canyon Springs’ Joe Spiers had a double in the third inning of Wednesday’s 4-3 Ivy League victory over Moreno Valley Valley View to extend his hitting streak to 43.

That equals the state record set by Torrance’s Jason Kendall from 1990 to ’92.

Kendall now plays for the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Valley View (4-8, 0-4) took a 2-1 lead on two unearned runs in the second, but Brad Yowell’s single tied the score in the fifth.

Trent Tulley got one of his two hits in the sixth, a run-scoring single for another run, and Ryan Gross increased Canyon Springs’ lead to 4-2 with a home run in the seventh.

Spiers will go after the record on Friday, when the Cougars (9-2, 3-1) play host to Riverside Poly.

About six hours after learning her father had died last Thursday from a heart attack -- he had been hospitalized after an automobile accident two days earlier -- Long Beach Millikan freshman Jackie Tema hit a two-run homer in the 10th inning that helped Millikan to a 4-1 Moore League victory.

“It was hard to play [but] my focus was to keep playing,” said Tema, 15, a catcher/first baseman who has maintained a positive attitude and says the games are getting easier. “My family wanted me to play.”

Said Coach Lynn Curylo: “I lost a mother when I was 24 and couldn’t even imagine being a freshman in high school and going through the same experience.

“She’s an amazing kid.”

The Trojans defeated Corona del Mar twice two seasons ago when they won the Pacific Coast title.

Robert Radnoti has had his one-year suspension as the cross-country and track and field coach at Thousand Oaks reduced to approximately three months.

Thousand Oaks administrators announced that they had suspended Radnoti from his coaching duties for one year for conducting off-season workouts in violation of Southern Section rules.

But Radnoti said he later received a letter from Conejo Valley Unified School District superintendent Robert Fraisse stating that he would be allowed to take over Thousand Oaks’ cross-country program when an orientation meeting for runners is held in June.

Assistant superintendent of personnel Jody Dunlap confirmed that Radnoti would return as coach at Thousand Oaks.

“I wanted to return to coaching as soon as I could,” said Radnoti, who began coaching at Thousand Oaks in 1998 and had questioned from the start whether he had broken a section rule. “So I’m happy about this.”

The girls’ basketball team from Santa Margarita Tesoro and the boys’ basketball team from Hemet earned CIF Academic state championships -- the first such honor for each school in any sport.

Tesoro players combined for a 3.86 grade-point average to finish ahead of Pico Rivera Mesrobian’s 3.84, and Hemet’s cumulative GPA of 3.67 edged Cambria Coast Union’s 3.64 and San Luis Obispo’s 3.60.

The race also was tight among wrestling programs as Santa Rosa Montgomery’s 3.38 GPA barely topped Diamond Bar’s 3.37.
