A 13-year-old boy was shot in the upper body while playing whiffle ball with a friend Sunday afternoon at Montrose Community Park in Glendale, police said.

The boy, whose name was not released, was taken to Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena, where he underwent surgery. He was in critical but stable condition in the intensive care unit, and his injury was not considered life-threatening, said Glendale Police Sgt. Tom Lorenz.

While playing shortly after 2 p.m., the boy suddenly fell down and his friend ran to the boy’s father, who was nearby at a Little League game, authorities said.

Police believe the teen was not an intentional target.

“No one heard a gunshot, which leads us to believe it was a round fired from a distance away, from a small-caliber weapon,” Lorenz said. “It looks like a bullet was fired randomly into the air and it came down and found a 13-year-old boy.”
