Television’s New Year’s Day rings in with a schedule of traditional programming that includes a parade and a football game in Pasadena, a music concert in Vienna, a classic TV series marathon and several holiday specials.

Rose Parade: The 115th edition of the Tournament of Roses parade assembles on Orange Grove Boulevard in Pasadena for its annual 5 1/2-mile march down Colorado Boulevard. John Williams, the award-winning film composer and orchestra conductor, is the 2004 grand marshal, and the theme for the floral celebration is, what else, “Music Music Music.” Rose Queen Megan Chinen and her Royal Court will accentuate the pageantry.

The festival of floats, equestrian units and marching bands will start at 8 a.m. on CBS, NBC, ABC, KTLA and KWHY. KTLA will begin its coverage at 6 a.m., and will telecast repeats of the parade throughout the day, starting at 10:30.

Music: Riccardo Muti conducts the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra in a concert of classic Strauss compositions, including “The Blue Danube Waltz,” on PBS’ “Great Performances.” Walter Cronkite celebrates his 20th year as host of the event held at Vienna’s Musikverein, at 8 p.m. on KCET and KVCR.

Specials: NBC presents “Brian Boitano’s Skating Spectacular,” featuring the Olympic gold medal winner with musical guest Brian McKnight. Joining the show in Las Vegas are professional skaters Ilia Kulik, Kristi Yamaguchi, Steve Cousins and Yuka Sato, at 1 p.m.

Fox offers a double dip of “American Idol,” starting at 8 p.m. with “Life on the Road,” which follows the travels of second-season performers around the country.

At 9 p.m. comes Part 2 of “World Idol,” in which votes are totaled for singers from different countries, including America’s Kelly Clarkson, in a competition for the global title.

Sports: Quarterback Matt Leinart leads USC against tailback Chris Perry and Michigan in a return of the traditional matchup of Pacific-10 versus Big Ten champions, in the 90th Rose Bowl game, at 1:30 p.m. on ABC.

Marathon: The Sci-Fi Channel continues its two-day presentation of episodes of Rod Serling’s classic series “The Twilight Zone.”
