Coach Quits at Oaks Christian

Share

Gary Abraham, in his third season as basketball coach at Westlake Village Oaks Christian, has resigned. Athletic Director Jan Hethcock would not elaborate.

“Gary Abraham is no longer employed by Oaks Christian and will no longer be coaching basketball at the high school,” Hethcock said. “It is the policy of the high school not to publicly discuss or disclose details regarding personnel decisions.”

Abraham, who guided the Lions to the Southern Section Division IV-AA title in March in only their second varsity season, was disciplined by the school after being arrested on Aug. 10 in Ventura on suspicion of driving under the influence, Principal Jeff Woodcock said in September. Parents were informed of the incident and told that Abraham would remain as coach.

Woodcock declined to disclose the disciplinary action against the coach at the time but said Abraham apologized for the incident.

Assistant coaches Ryan Moore and Adrian Phillips will serve as co-coaches on an interim basis.

Pomona Ganesha has outscored its opponents, 60-17, while posting a 12-1 record this season. But Coach Gabriel Chavez isn’t getting overly excited about the Giants’ success.

He remembers all too well what happened last year.

Ganesha entered the Southern Section Division IV playoffs with a 22-1-1 record and a No. 2 seeding, but was beaten by Anaheim Century, 2-1, in the first round.

“The players were overconfident heading into that game,” Chavez said. “I want to make sure that doesn’t happen again.”

Just over a week after winning the Santa Ana Foothill Excalibur tournament, San Clemente finished in a 2-2 tie with Mission Viejo Trabuco Hills in a South Coast League game Thursday at Trabuco Hills.

The Tritons, ranked No. 1 in the Southland by The Times, led, 2-0, but allowed two goals in the final 17 minutes. It is the first time in six seasons that Trabuco Hills (8-3-4) has not lost to San Clemente.

“We are on cloud nine right now,” said Trabuco Hills Coach Dan Moreno, who helped assemble a crowd of about 500 students for the game. “We now know we can play with anyone.”

San Clemente is attracting national attention. In this week’s NSCAA/Adidas national rankings, the Tritons (8-2-4) jumped from unranked to No. 3, which Coach Stacey Finnerty said is “an honor, and well deserved with the talent we have.”

In its first game since Dec. 20, North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake defeated West Hills Chaminade for the third consecutive season in a Mission League opener, 4-0, on the road Wednesday.

Midfielder Jamie Artsis, a team captain who will attend Michigan in the fall, had three goals in a game for the second time this season for the Wolverines (6-2, 1-0 in league play). Teammate Bridget Ballard scored the other goal.

Chaminade, which finished runner-up to league champion Harvard-Westlake last season, falls to 6-2-2, 0-1.
