A woman was killed and a man was critically injured Wednesday in a four-vehicle accident on the Garden Grove Freeway, authorities said.

The accident occurred shortly before 2 p.m. about a mile east of the San Diego Freeway in Garden Grove, said California Highway Patrol Officer Katrina Lundgren.

Michelle Ruth Gald, 37, of Garden Grove, who was driving a minivan, veered onto the right shoulder of the freeway and into the bed of a stopped tow truck, officials said. The tow truck driver was changing the tire of another vehicle, and the impact of the minivan sent his truck forward and into the other car.

Lungren said it was unclear how the fourth vehicle became involved or whether anyone else was injured.

Gald was thrown from her vehicle and killed.

The tow truck driver was hospitalized at UCI Medical Center in Orange.

The eastbound lanes of the Garden Grove Freeway were shut down at the San Diego Freeway until 5:15 p.m., backing up traffic for miles, Lundgren said.
