All-Star Game Will Be Payton’s Place

Bryan Payton, a Times’ All-Star at Covina South Hills High, will lead the East team Friday in the San Gabriel Valley Hall of Fame football game at El Monte Arroyo.

Payton, an Oregon State-bound receiver and cornerback, will be joined by his twin brother, Jeremy, a two-way player at the same positions, who is headed for Arizona State.

Other Times’ all-regional players on the East team are Patrick Fuller, a running back from Covina Charter Oak; Randy Tresvant, a defensive back from La Puente Bassett, and three players from Hacienda Heights Los Altos: defensive back Daniel Drayton, lineman Kevin Montano and linebacker Ronny Rodriguez.

The West team will feature all-regional players Frankie Bernard, a quarterback, and Juan Magallon, a receiver, both from San Gabriel High.

Girls’ Basketball

Rob DiMuro has been hired to coach at Woodland Hills Louisville. DiMuro will have to coach against his wife, Kelli, who’s in charge of the program at Mission League rival West Hills Chaminade.

Newhall Hart, runner-up to San Clemente last season in Southern Section Division I, has picked up a top transfer in 5-foot-9 Joy Sterling from Mission Hills Alemany.

Baseball

Infielder Brandon Laird of Westminster La Quinta, catcher Landon Hernandez of Palm Springs Desert Chapel and former South Gate infielder Randy Molina have been selected to play for the USA Baseball Junior national team.

The 18-and-under team will compete at the International Baseball Federation’s World Junior championships, Sept. 3-12, in Taiwan.

Infielder Ryan Aguayo of Anaheim Servite, outfielder Ryan Knox of Riverside King, pitcher Robert Stock of Agoura and catcher Hank Conger of Huntington Beach have been chosen to play for the USA Baseball Youth National team.

The 16-and-under team will compete in the Confederation of Pan American Baseball qualifier, Sept. 3-12, in Aguascalientes, Mexico.
