Youth Dies in Drive-By Shooting on Westside

A 14-year-old boy became the fourth child to be shot in Los Angeles in as many days when he was gunned down outside an apartment building, police said Friday.

Police said he had been standing in the 2600 block of South Corning Street on the Westside at 5 p.m. Thursday when he was hit. The boy, whose name was not released, died later that evening at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Police Officer Don Cox said.

On Wednesday, a 3-year-old girl in a stroller was shot outside Gumbo Discount Supermarket on Vernon Avenue in South Los Angeles by someone in a car. She was in critical condition.

A day earlier, a 5-year-old boy was shot in the head as he played with friends in his Sylmar backyard on Nurmi Street. He was also in critical condition, with a bullet lodged in his head.

On Monday, a 13-year-old boy was shot to death as he spoke to friends outside a house on 43rd Place in South Los Angeles.

All of the attacks were apparently made by people in passing cars. Police have made no arrests.
