Healthcare in Jail

Share

Re “Prisons Fail to Heal Healthcare,” Sept. 29: Based on the examples cited, I would agree with your reporter that the state of healthcare in the California prison system is appalling. However, the sad truth is that even this deeply flawed healthcare is far better than what is available to many of the most disadvantaged, innocent people in our state.

Those who have to wait for hours at city emergency rooms for basic patch-up care, and have no other care, are far more deserving than people convicted of offenses against society.

Everyone deserves adequate medical care. This includes incarcerated criminals. However, what physician in any field would want to work in jailhouse conditions? Sometimes you have to settle for what you can get.
