Villa Park Wins Its Water Polo Event

Shea Buckner and Mark Milovic scored Villa Park’s first two goals and carried the bulk of the offensive load Saturday as the Spartans defeated Carlsbad, 14-10, to win the championship of their own water polo tournament for the first time since 2000.

Buckner, a senior utility player who earned most-valuable-player honors in the 32-team event, finished with five goals. Milovic, a senior two-meter guard, wound up with three.

The Spartans (13-0), ranked No. 1 in the Southern Section Division II, took control in the second quarter, when they outscored Carlsbad (12-1) by a 5-2 margin and junior goalie Andy Stevens recorded one of his 15 saves on a four-meter penalty shot.

Lindsey Ensign had 20 kills and Jordan Smith added nine kills and 16 digs as Corona del Mar defeated Waukesha (Wis.) Catholic Memorial, 25-21, 23-25, 27-25, and finished fifth in the Gold Division of the Mother Mary McAuley girls’ volleyball tournament in Chicago.

Placentia Valencia scored touchdowns after three turnovers and Rylon Thomas rushed for 103 yards in 18 carries as the Tigers defeated Corona del Mar, 33-3, in a nonleague game at Newport Harbor.

Valencia (4-0), ranked No. 4 in Southern Section Division VI, took a 6-3 lead on a 72-yard fumble return by safety Rashad Chambers late in the first quarter. A muffed punt set up a seven-yard touchdown reception by Josh Racobs midway through the second quarter, and Thomas scored on a 28-yard run after Dedreck Floyd’s interception late in the third quarter.

Long Beach Poly defensive lineman Daniel Imoesiri, taken away by ambulance after a fourth-quarter tackle Friday in a 41-14 loss to Mission Viejo, suffered a strained shoulder, Poly Coach Raul Lara said Saturday.

Imoesiri was caught at the bottom of the pile after a 38-yard run by Mission Viejo running back Chane Moline. He was treated on the field for about 15 minutes and then transported to Long Beach Memorial hospital.

The Jackrabbits also lost quarterback Cruz Parsons to a right knee injury, which will not be fully diagnosed until Monday, Lara said
