A student pilot escaped injury when he crash-landed his single-engine airplane Sunday on a dirt lot near Whiteman Airport in Pacoima, officials said.

The 55-year-old man was practicing takeoffs and landings when he struck power lines over Osborne Street, near San Fernando Road, at 12:47 p.m., said Bob Collis, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Fire Department.

The pilot declined to be taken to a hospital, Collis said.

The crash occurred near homes and businesses that surround the airport.

Residents and business owners have long been concerned about the frequency of accidents at or around the airfield.

Last November, a pilot lost control and crash-landed into two parked planes on the airport’s tarmac. He was uninjured.

In November 2002, another small plane attempting to land struck a moving car, then smashed into a used-car lot a few blocks from the runway.

The pilot and the driver of the car sustained minor injuries.
