CIF Likely to Get State-Title Proposal

From Times Staff Reports

A specific proposal addressing the possibility of state championship games in football is likely to be submitted today when the California Interscholastic Federation’s Federated Council meets in San Diego.

The development of state bowl games was discussed across the state last year. The preliminary plan, according to CIF Assistant Commissioner Roger Blake, includes three championship bowl games to be played in Southern California on Dec. 16, 2006, matching the top teams from three Southern California enrollment-based divisions against their counterparts from Northern California. The teams would be selected by a special committee aided by computer ratings.

The plan calls for a two-year trial run, and revenue raised would go to the CIF to defray costs of its coaching education program.

The Nov. 5 Sunset League football game between Fountain Valley and Huntington Beach Edison, No. 7 in The Times’ rankings, will take place at Angel Stadium. Tickets, priced at $10 for reserved seats, $8 for general admission, $5 for students with identification and $5 for children, are on sale at both schools through Nov. 4.

The Simi Valley Royal boys’ cross-country team, favored to win the Ventura County championships for the third time in four years, is expected to be without sophomores Hudson Andrews and Danny Benson -- the regular fourth and fifth runners -- because of recent illnesses and fatigue that have prompted Coach Ryan Luce to rest the young athletes and juggle his lineup.

The Highlanders will still feature No. 1 runner Dylan Jaedtke, a senior, and sophomore Michael Cybulski.

Other contenders for the boys’ team title will be Ventura, which will rest some athletes but will have senior standouts Chris Gurney and Taylor Garrett, and Thousand Oaks, led by Michael Fabrega. An individual contender is Camarillo’s Ted Price, who clocked 15:24 -- two seconds faster than Jaedtke -- to place 13th in the Division I individual sweepstakes at the Mt. San Antonio College Invitational on Saturday.

Oak Park won the girls’ title last year, and is expected to be among the contenders with Ventura and Royal.

The girls’ varsity race is scheduled for 4 p.m. and will be followed by the boys’ race at 4:30.

The city of Lompoc is expected to fare well in the Santa Barbara County Championships today at River Park in Lompoc.

The Lompoc girls’ team may again be without top runner Audrey Barrett because of flu-like symptoms that have kept the junior out of the squad’s last two meets, but the Braves are favored to win the girls’ team title with the help of junior twins Carrie and Ariana Fabing.

Lompoc Cabrillo, with juniors Michael Coe and Colin Hacker, is favored to win the boys’ team title, although those two will be challenged for top individual honors by Lompoc senior Eduardo Ramos.

The girls’ varsity race will begin at 3 p.m., with the boys to follow at 3:30. Lower-level races will precede varsity competition.
