At Least There’s Nothing Small About Carry-Over

Share

The first full week of racing at Hollywood Park’s spring-summer meet begins with a pick six carry-over of $555,240.

Small fields, a regular weekday occurrence at local tracks, are the order of the day. Only one race in the pick six has more than nine horses.

Alex Solis, who won three races in the first three days of the season, has mounts in four of the pick six races, including Loving Type, the probable favorite in the final race, a $25,000 claimer for older maidens at 1 1/16 miles.

Owned by Arnold Zetcher and trained by Ron McAnally, Loving Type, a 6-year-old Argentine-bred, is 0 for 15 but has been second in his last three outings. His 10 rivals are 0 for 66.

Solis’ other mounts in the pick six are Line Of Departure, a maiden making his first start in more than a year and first for trainer Richard Mandella, in the fifth; longshot Hotel Hall, winless on grass, in the sixth, the lone turf race in the pick six; and Strut Your Stuff in the seventh.

Besides Solis, Corey Nakatani, Victor Espinoza and Garrett Gomez also had three winners during Hollywood Park’s opening weekend. Alex Bisono, Omar Figueroa, Jose Valdivia Jr., Jon Court and Tyler Baze won twice.

Race of the day: Angara, who ran the best race of her career when treated with Lasix for the first time in her Keeneland debut April 16, will stretch out to 1 1/2 miles on turf in today’s Bewitch, a Grade III for older fillies and mares. Gary Stevens will again ride the 4-year-old Alzao filly for owner Martin Schwartz and trainer Patrick Biancone versus seven opponents.

One for the road: Cold Blow Lane makes his first start since Aug. 19 and first for high-percentage trainer Bruce Levine and could spring a surprise in today’s fifth at Aqueduct. Mike Luzzi will ride the 7-year-old Afternoon Deelites gelding in the $12,500 claimer at seven furlongs.

Exotically speaking: An early pick four using Siphon Melody and Icy Route in the first, John’s Kinda Girl, Apple Juice Tea and Thermostatic in the second, Do Da Princess and Mysterious Peace in the third, and Parker Valley, Khyber Pass and Prince Of Gold in the fourth.
