Gulfstream Increases Accident Coverage

Gulfstream Park, where a jockey suffered serious injuries Sunday, has increased accident-insurance coverage for riders from a maximum of $100,000 to $500,000, the Hallandale Beach, Fla., track announced Wednesday.

The added coverage will be in effect for the rest of the meet, which ends April 24.

Gary Boulanger, 37, was listed in serious condition Wednesday. After Sunday’s spill, Boulanger underwent surgery to relieve a blood clot on the brain and his spleen was removed. His condition has improved from critical to serious and his agent, Cory Moran, said: “He’s breathing freely now, on his own, and he’s slowly recovering.”

Gulfstream is the latest track to react to a national outcry by jockeys who say that the industry has left them underinsured. Lone Star Park, in Grand Prairie, Texas, increased its policy to $500,000 for the three-day Breeders’ Cup meet last year. In California and four other states, jockeys are covered by workers’ compensation insurance.
