A 24-year-old man was hit by the steps of a freight train and killed while apparently walking on the tracks early Friday, police said.

The man, who was not identified pending notification of relatives, was hit about 5:15 a.m. on the eastbound tracks near Crowther Avenue and Melrose Street.

The engineer of the Burlington Northern-Santa Fe freight train, which was traveling about 45 mph, blew the whistle and the man jumped to the side but was struck by the steps of the train, police said.
