Surfer Pulled From Ocean Near Pier Is ID’d
A man who died after possibly hitting his head on a pylon while bodysurfing near the Balboa Pier off Newport Beach was identified Saturday as Francis Roberts, 49, of Blandford Forum in southern England, officials said.
Roberts was pronounced dead at Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian in Newport Beach after being found about 3:45 p.m. Friday floating in the water near the pier, police said.
Though an autopsy was conducted Saturday, officials said the cause of death had not yet been determined pending the results of toxicology tests.
