Monterey shark travels wide
A young white shark that was released from the Monterey Bay Aquarium in March has traveled more than 100 miles offshore and 800 feet below the surface -- an indication to marine biologists that the shark is thriving.
The shark’s travels were documented by an electronic tag that was attached to the shark for 30 days and recovered on May 5 near Santa Barbara. The shark, which was 5 feet long when it was inadvertently caught by a commercial fisherman off Huntington Beach, spent 198 days at the aquarium, where it grew by more than a foot and gained 100 pounds.
Marine biologists hope the data from the tag will help them better understand the behavior of young sharks.
