D.J. Shockley threw five touchdown passes and ran for one, leading 13th-ranked Georgia to a 48-13 victory over No. 18 Boise State on Saturday at Athens, Ga.

Jared Zabransky and the high-scoring Broncos were overwhelmed by Georgia’s revamped defense, which didn’t seem to have any trouble replacing David Pollack, Thomas Davis and Odell Thurman, three standouts who moved on to the NFL, or coordinator Brian VanGorder, who also landed a job in the professional ranks.

For Boise State, ranked in the preseason for the first time, the opener was a jarring lesson in big-time football.

“We got spanked,” Coach Dan Hawkins said. “Georgia is a very good football team. That had a lot to do with it.”

Shockley took over as the No. 1 quarterback after being a redshirt his first year and backing up David Greene the last three seasons.

The Bulldogs didn’t miss a beat with Shockley, who tied Greene’s school record for touchdown passes in a game -- in less than three quarters -- and showed an ability to run that his predecessor lacked.

Shockley completed 16 of 24 passes for 289 yards -- numbers that would have been even better without four dropped throws. He rushed five times for a team-leading 85 yards.

Contrast those numbers with the ones put up by Zabransky: four interceptions and two fumbles before being sent to the bench just before halftime.

No. 10 Florida 32, Wyoming 14 -- Chris Leak answered all the questions about whether he could run Urban Meyer’s spread offense.

Leak completed 26 of 34 passes for 320 yards and three touchdowns at Gainesville, Fla., and broke Steve Spurrier’s school record for consecutive completions with 17 in Meyer’s debut with the Gators.

The offense sputtered at times, but made several big plays and scored touchdowns on three passes from Leak to Chad Jackson. The receiver finished with 10 catches for 138 yards.

Alabama 26, Middle Tennessee 7 -- Brodie Croyle threw for 210 yards and a touchdown, and Tim Castille ran for two scores at Tuscaloosa, Ala.

Alabama’s offense was hurt last season after Croyle’s year was ended when he injured his knee in the third game.

Arkansas 49, Missouri State 17 -- Peyton Hillis ran for 135 yards and three touchdowns at Fayetteville, Ark., leading the Razorbacks to their highest rushing output in 30 years.

The Razorbacks rushed for 483 yards, their most since running for 501 against Air Force in 1975.

Mississippi State 38, Murray State 6 -- Omarr Conner threw two of his career-high four touchdown passes to freshman Keon Humphries at Starkville, Miss.

The game’s prelude had a somber tone: Instead of running onto the field, Coach Sylvester Croom and the Bulldogs walked solemnly to the sideline while the scoreboard showed a tribute to the victims of Hurricane Katrina.

Mississippi State officials said about 2,000 evacuees claimed free tickets to the game.
