A San Bernardino man suspected of killing his 90-year-old grandmother was arrested Friday on suspicion of murder, authorities said.

Derrick Mitchell Hassett, 25, was arrested less than 24 hours after his mother found the body of Josephine Frances Kelley inside her San Bernardino home, which had been ransacked.

By early Friday, San Bernardino police investigators established that Kelley’s slaying was “not an act of random violence,” department spokesman Brian Boom said.

Homicide detectives have yet to establish a motive in the slaying, which occurred in the 2800 block of Muscupiabe Drive. Boom said Kelley suffered no obvious wounds, and declined to say how detectives linked Hassett to the slaying.

Kelley, a longtime San Bernardino resident, had lived in the home with relatives for about four years, Boom said. Police investigators believe Kelley was killed a few hours before Hassett’s mother arrived about 4 p.m. Thursday.
