From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Oklahoma State basketball Coach Eddie Sutton was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol Friday after tests showed his blood-alcohol level was nearly three times the legal limit after a car crash last week.

Sutton, who is on a medical leave of absence, also was charged by Payne County prosecutors with speeding and driving left of center. In the accident last Friday, Sutton’s sport-utility vehicle swerved across four lanes of traffic, slammed into the back of another car, then crashed into a tree.

The driver of the other vehicle, Teresa Barnard, suffered minor injuries and was released at the scene.

Long Beach State administrators have renewed a nationwide search for a new athletic director to replace Bill Shumard, who resigned last summer to take the position of president and chief executive of the Special Olympics of Southern California.

“While we had a good search process and good candidates in the last round, we ultimately were not able to arrive at a consensus that resulted in hiring a new A.D., so we’re back to the drawing board,” said Douglas Robinson, search committee chair and Long Beach State vice president for student services.

Cindy Masner will continue as interim athletic director until a permanent replacement is named. Long Beach has also hired Carr Sports Associates Inc. to serve as consultants in the job search.
