Currie’s 43 Help Duke Avoid Upset

Monique Currie scored 15 of her 43 points in the second overtime to help top-ranked Duke avoid an upset with a 99-93 win over Miami on Sunday in Coral Gables, Fla.

Currie’s three-pointer with 3:30 left in the second overtime put the Blue Devils (24-1, 12-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) ahead for good, 83-80. She also was 10 for 10 on free throws in the final 1:33 to secure the victory.

Miami’s Albrey Grimsley made a short jumper with 31 seconds left in the first overtime to tie the score at 78-78. Lindsey Harding’s turnover with 11 seconds left gave Miami (15-11, 5-8) a last chance to win in the first overtime, but Chante Black blocked Renee Taylor’s drive with one second left.

No. 2 Louisiana State 64, Arkansas 42 -- Seimone Augustus scored 26 points at home for the Lady Tigers (23-2, 11-1 Southeastern Conference), who maintained their one-game lead over Tennessee in the conference race. Arkansas is 13-11 overall, 5-6 in conference.

No. 4 Maryland 65, North Carolina State 57 -- Laura Harper scored 20 points on the road for the Terrapins (23-4, 10-2 ACC), who made five of their first six shots and never trailed.

Khadijah Whittington scored 14 points to lead N.C. State (16-10, 6-7). Seniors Billie McDowell and Monica Pope added 13 and 11 points.

No. 5 Tennessee 82, Alabama 65 -- Shanna Zolman equaled her career high with 28 points, including seven three-pointers, to lift Tennessee in Tuscaloosa, Ala.

The Lady Vols (24-3, 10-2 SEC) finally managed a stress-free game after three consecutive three-point decisions, winning their 30th consecutive meeting with the Crimson Tide (9-16, 3-9).

No. 7 Rutgers 60, Syracuse 43 -- Michelle Campbell and Cappie Pondexter each scored 13 points at home to help Rutgers to its ninth straight win. Matee Ajavon and Essence Carson had 11 each and Kia Vaughn added 10 for the Scarlet Knights (21-3, 13-0 Big East), who have won 21 straight conference games dating back to last season.

Jenny Eckhart had 11 for Syracuse (9-15, 2-11).

No. 8 Connecticut 79, Notre Dame 64 -- Ann Strother scored 11 of her 19 points during a decisive run midway through the second half on the road to lead the Huskies (24-3, 12-1 Big East), who clinched the No. 2 seeding in the conference tournament.

Indiana 63, No. 10 Purdue 61 -- Cyndi Valentin made a tying three-pointer with five seconds left in regulation and two free throws with three seconds left in overtime, giving Indiana the upset in West Lafayette, Ind., and knocking the Boilermakers out of first place in the Big Ten.

Valentin led the Hoosiers with 25 points and overshadowed the career-high 32 by Purdue’s Katie Gearlds. It was the third straight overtime game between the in-state rivals and ended a six-game winning streak by Purdue (21-4, 12-2 Big Ten) over the Hoosiers (15-10, 9-5).

No. 12 Baylor 73, Texas Tech 60 -- Sophia Young had 22 points and 11 rebounds in Waco, Texas, for the Lady Bears (19-5, 9-4 Big 12).

The Lady Raiders (12-12, 7-6) tied the game at 52-52 on a layup by LaToya Davis with just over 11 minutes left. But Baylor put together a 12-4 run and took a 64-56 lead with 4:55 to play.

No. 13 Georgia 83, No. 22 Vanderbilt 61 -- Sherill Baker scored a game-high 22 points to lead Georgia in Nashville. The Lady Bulldogs (18-7, 8-4 SEC) pulled away early, as Cori Chambers made two three-pointers in a 10-0 run that gave Georgia an early 22-11 lead over Vanderbilt (17-9, 6-6).

Wisconsin 67, No. 17 Minnesota 61 -- Janese Banks scored 18 points to lead four players in double figures for the Badgers, who won at home.

Danielle Ward scored with 55.2 seconds left to break a 61-61 tie, and Banks made four free throws in the final 18.1 seconds to clinch the game for Wisconsin (11-16, 5-10 Big Ten).

Jamie Broback scored 21 points for Minnesota (17-8, 9-5), which lost its fourth straight game.

No. 23 Temple 70, Dayton 36 -- Candice Dupree scored 24 points for the Owls (20-6, 11-3 Atlantic 10), who used a 20-4 run midway through the first half to pull away at Dayton (16-9, 8-6).
