Big Test for Squallacious

Share

One of Corey Nakatani’s victories on his way to 3,000 came when he teamed with first-time starter Squallacious on April 29.

A 3-year-old daughter of Summer Squall owned by Richard Trontz and trained by Mike Puype, she will seek another victory today when she faces five other fillies and mares in the seventh race at Hollywood Park.

The 7-5 favorite in her debut, Squallacious was impressive in victory. She rallied in the stretch to win by 1 1/4 lengths over Political Web, who returned to break her maiden convincingly on Sunday. Squallacious ran the six furlongs in 1:10.

This afternoon, Squallacious, who has trained well since the win, will stretch to seven furlongs in the $49,000 allowance against True Xena, Fletchers Cove, Catch A Star, Glamour Cat and Ever So Nice.

True Xena, second by a nose to Private World in the Moccasin Stakes over this track on Nov. 20, will be seeking to rebound from a poor effort in her 3-year-old debut on April 28.

A distant third at 11-10 odds that night, True Xena, owned by Stan Fulton and trained by Rafael Becerra, will break from the rail under Jon Court.

Race of the day: Shore Patrol, who has won two of four, will try two turns for the first time in the first race today at Hollywood Park. Matt Garcia will ride the 3-year-old Deputy Commander colt, who won his last start by 5 3/4 lengths on May 14, for trainer Marty Jones and Running K Stable in the $51,000 allowance at 1 1/16 miles.

One for the road: Take My Leave should improve in her second start on turf against easier company in the seventh race today at Philadelphia Park. Harry Vega will ride the 3-year-old daughter of Capote for owner-breeder Pin Oak Stable and hot trainer Graham Motion in the $20,000 maiden contest at a mile and 70 yards. Motion won with eight of his first 15 starters at Philadelphia Park.

Exotically speaking: A late pick four using Early Ronan, Rich Sense and Blue Cay in the fifth, In High Form, Adance, Classic Quality, Newyearresolution and Axiomatic in the sixth, Squallacious in the seventh and Echezeaux, Cousin Joe and It’s Who You Know in the eighth.
