Browns had hand in own loss

The success of Denver’s defense starts up front, and for that the Broncos can thank the Cleveland Browns.

Denver’s starting front four -- Ebenezer Ekuban, Kenard Lang, Michael Myers and Gerard Warren -- are all Cleveland castoffs.

Ekuban, Myers and Warren were all traded from the Browns to Denver before the 2005 season, and Lang was released by Cleveland and signed by Denver before this season.

The front four are key cogs in a stingy Broncos defense that has given up only two touchdowns this season -- the second fewest through six games in NFL history.

They repaid their former employers Sunday with a combined eight tackles and two sacks in a 17-7 victory.

Afterward, Lang forbade any of the former Browns from gloating.

“We ain’t talking,” he said. “None of us. It’s over. We agreed no one on the D-line is talking.”

Colt crashes car

Indianapolis defensive tackle Montae Reagor was hospitalized with a head wound Sunday after his sport utility vehicle collided with another vehicle and flipped onto its roof while he was en route to the Colts’ game against the Redskins.

Reagor was declared inactive and the team said he was at Methodist Hospital with two team doctors.

Anthony McFarland, who was traded Tuesday from Tampa Bay to the Colts, replaced Reagor in the starting lineup.

Lost his edge

Running back Edgerrin James continues to struggle in his first season with Arizona.

James rushed 13 times for 34 yards Sunday in a loss to Oakland, bringing his season total to 432 yards in seven games.

He rushed for 9,226 yards in seven seasons with Indianapolis but has yet to reach the 100-yard mark in a game this season.

“I wasn’t prepared for this, man, I really wasn’t,” he said. “I don’t know what we’re doing.”

Hey, what about me?

Chiefs tight end Tony Gonzalez continued his mastery of the Chargers when he had six receptions for 138 yards Sunday.

He has averaged more than eight catches and 100 yards in his last five games against them.

He came into Sunday’s game with 21 catches for 187 yards this season.

“I’m not the kind of guy who comes to the media saying, ‘I’m not getting the ball.’ But yeah, it’s been frustrating,” Gonzalez said. “But at the same time, they’re going to start coming to me because they’ve got to. I’ve proved in the past that I can do it.”

Still waiting

Eagles rookie left tackle Winston Justice, a former USC and Long Beach Poly standout, did not play Sunday against Tampa Bay.

There was speculation Justice might make his NFL debut because starter William “Tra” Thomas sat out practice because of back spasms, but Thomas felt good enough to play, leaving Justice on the inactive list.

Break on through

When Texans rookie Wali Lundy scored on a two-yard run in the fourth quarter of a 27-7 victory over Jacksonville, it was the first rushing touchdown for Houston this season.

The victory also marked the first time in franchise history the Texans have won consecutive home games.

Lundy finished with 93 yards rushing; no Houston running back had gained 60 yards rushing this season before then.

Milestones

Quarterback Peyton Manning and receiver Marvin Harrison of the Colts continued moving up their respective all-time lists Sunday.

Harrison caught seven passes for 73 yards, giving him 12,846 for his career to pass Irving Fryar for eighth on the NFL’s yards receiving list.

Manning threw four touchdown passes and has 256, passing Dan Fouts (254) and Sonny Jurgensen (255) for 10th all-time.

Anquan Boldin of Arizona caught his 300th pass in his 47th game, making him the fastest player to reach the mark, besting Lionel Taylor’s record of 54 games.

Injury report

Quarterbacks Ben Roethlisberger of the Steelers, Matt Hasselbeck of the Seahawks and Andrew Walter of the Raiders were among players who left games because of injury Sunday.

Roethlisberger took a blow to the head, Walter injured his hamstring and Hasselbeck sprained his knee. None of them played after leaving their games.

Hasselbeck will have an MRI exam today to determine the extent of his injury, Walter said he would return next week and Roethlisberger’s status was uncertain.

“I don’t have any initial diagnosis on him,” Steelers Coach Bill Cohwer said. “I don’t want to speculate at this point, but he was on the sideline at the end of the game and he was understanding everything that was going on.”

Cleveland quarterback Charlie Frye suffered a concussion but finished his team’s game against Denver.
