Gorman fire is 80% contained
Firefighters hoping to fully contain a 2,500-acre brush fire south of Gorman on Sunday night had 80% of the blaze under control by the evening.
The blaze had forced the evacuation of 3,000 people from a campground and recreation area and a handful of homes, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. No one was injured, and no houses were damaged, fire officials said.
The fire started about 2 p.m. Saturday near the Golden State Freeway and Gorman Post Road. Gorman, an unincorporated community, lies at an elevation of nearly 4,000 feet in northwestern Los Angeles County, about 70 miles from Los Angeles.
Campers and picnickers were evacuated Saturday from Hungry Valley State Vehicular Recreation Area as strong winds quickly spread the flames.
Others on Saturday were evacuated from a recreation area at Pyramid Lake as well as a motorcycle park. Residents from homes around Quail Canyon Road also were asked to leave.
The cause of the blaze was not determined, but authorities were investigating reports of multiple fires igniting simultaneously in the area Saturday. A vehicle was reported on fire on Interstate 5 on Saturday.
