Boise State runs past Fresno State, 34-21

Jeremy Avery led Boise State’s dominant running game with a career-high 124 yards and three touchdowns, and the Broncos avenged their only Western Athletic Conference loss in the last half-decade with a 34-21 victory over Fresno State on Friday night.

D.J. Harper had a career-best 153 yards and a score for the five-time conference champion Broncos (7-1, 4-0), whose only loss in their last 44 WAC games was a 27-7 defeat in Fresno in 2005.

Boise State, which trounced the Bulldogs in Idaho last year during its undefeated season, controlled its latest trip to the Central Valley with 282 yards from its powerful ground game.

With star Ian Johnson sidelined because of a bruised kidney, the Broncos’ freshman ballcarriers wore down the Bulldogs (5-3, 4-1).

Jordan Culbreath ran for 145 yards and two touchdowns as Princeton held on for a 34-31 Ivy League win over visiting Cornell. The teams traded scores for most of the night before the Tigers went ahead for good on Culbreath’s 58-yard run midway through the fourth quarter.

Georgia Tech, already without Atlantic Coast Conference rushing leader Tashard Choice, could be without backup Rashaun Grant for the rest of the season.

Grant, who was expected to be Choice’s replacement next Thursday night against Virginia Tech, was knocked out of the fourth quarter of last Saturday’s win over Army after taking a hit above his right ankle. He had rushed for 119 yards and a touchdown before leaving because of the injury.

Choice underwent arthroscopic surgery on Tuesday for a right knee injury and is expected to be out at least a week. Freshman Jonathan Dwyer and sophomore Jamaal Evans probably will get the bulk of the snaps against the Hokies.
