Gunman sought in Pomona killing
Police searched Wednesday for the gunman who shot and killed a 71-year-old woman and wounded two others in the frontyard of a home in Pomona, authorities said.
Officers arrived at the house on Mayfair Avenue about 9:30 p.m. Tuesday and found Florence Anderson with bullet wounds to her upper body, Pomona police said. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
The two wounded people were identified as Anderson’s nephew, 39-year-old Calvin Wimbley, and Anderson’s 17-year-old great-nephew, both from Irvine. Police said their injuries were not life-threatening.
Anderson’s daughter Brenda Tribble said her mother was often outdoors because she suffered from asthma.
Anderson was well-respected in the community, Tribble said, and people sometimes called her Mother Anderson.
“She’s a person that helps many people, drug addicts, alcoholics; she let them stay there because they don’t have nowhere to stay,” Tribble told KNBC-TV Channel 4.
“They would always rip her off, but she’d still keep helping people. She said that’s what God called her to do.”
A neighbor, 23-year-old Anthony Bonner, said the street of modest one-story homes was quiet.
“It’s terrible,” Bonner said when he heard of Anderson’s death.
“She was a wonderful lady and good for the community.”
