The New York Giants announced that halfback Brandon Jacobs will sit out their game against Dallas on Sunday because of a knee injury.

“We just don’t think he will be ready,” Coach Tom Coughlin said of Jacobs on Friday.

Derrick Ward will replace Jacobs, with Ahmad Bradshaw backing him up. Danny Ware, who has never carried the ball in an NFL regular-season game, probably will be the third back, although there is an outside chance Coughlin will use veteran Reuben Droughns.

Gruden is optimistic Garcia can play

Tampa Bay quarterback Jeff Garcia was limited during practice because of a right calf strain and is listed as questionable for the game Sunday at Atlanta. Coach Jon Gruden said he was optimistic that Garcia will be able to play.

If he doesn’t, the Buccaneers probably will use Luke McCown or Brian Griese.

Frerotte doubtful

Minnesota quarterback Gus Frerotte is listed as doubtful for the Vikings’ game Sunday because of a lower back injury. That means backup Tarvaris Jackson probably will start against Arizona.

Etc.

Seahawks star tackle Walter Jones will miss Seattle’s final three games after microfracture surgery on his knee. . . . New England quarterback Matt Cassel practiced for a second consecutive day after the death of his father this week, but the Patriots declined to say whether he’ll play Sunday. . . . NFL handed out $5,000 fines for unnecessary roughness to Tennessee center Kevin Mawae, Cleveland wide receiver Donte Stallworth and Oakland defensive lineman Tommy Kelly. Arizona defensive tackle Darnell Dockett and New England tight end Benjamin Watson each received $10,000 fines for excessive celebrations.
