Quartz Hill clinches its first title

For the first time in its 44-year history, Quartz Hill can call itself a champion.

Junior running back Kyle Brooks finished with 92 yards and a touchdown in 16 carries as host Quartz Hill (13-1) captured its first division title after a 14-0 win over Mira Costa in front of a near-capacity crowd Friday night.

Senior fullback James Page scored the eventual game-winning touchdown on a three-yard run late in the third quarter. Brooks set up his seven-yard insurance touchdown in the fourth quarter off a 35-yard run that put the Rebels deep into the red zone.

Quartz Hill quarterback Josh Firm took nearly every snap of the game despite playing on a sore ankle that kept him out of practice the entire week, completing five of 14 passes for 69 yards.

Mira Costa (10-4) found some offensive success in the first half but was held to one first down in the second half. Leading rusher Chris Loatman finished with 76 yards in 12 carries and didn’t get much playing time in the final 24 minutes.

Seraphs cash in on Moorpark’s miscues

You can’t make mistakes against a good team like Ventura St. Bonaventure. No one understands this better than host Moorpark after it committed miscue after miscue in a 42-7 loss to the Seraphs in the Northern Division championship game.

Brady Rohach threw four interceptions for the Musketeers (12-2), three in the first half. Second-quarter picks by Tim Bennett and Dylan Davis led to a 52-yard touchdown run by Devon Blackledge and a 10-yard touchdown reception by Isaiah Burton, giving St. Bonaventure (13-1) a 21-0 lead.

Troy Hill returned an errant Rohach pass 58 yards for a score to increase the advantage to 28-0 at intermission.

Backup Brian Blechen replaced Rohach in the third quarter and didn’t fare much better.

One of his passes found Davis, and minutes later, Burton scored on an eight-yard pass play from Logan Meyer.

Cougars finish unbeaten

Rancho Cucamonga Coach Nick Baiz joined his father as a Southern Section coaching champion Friday as his Cougars intercepted Upland’s Stanford-bound quarterback Josh Nunes four times in a 21-7 Central Division championship victory at Chaffey College.

Baiz’s Cougars finished 13-0-1, capping the first unbeaten season in school history and earning the first Southern Section crown since 1999.

Baiz’s father, Bob, previously directed private Fermin Lasuen High to a 1962 crown, then won Southern Section crowns in 1984 and 1985 at Claremont. He is currently an assistant to his son.

Rancho Cucamonga pulled ahead, 14-0, in the first quarter on a 51-yard touchdown run by receiver Charles Saseun and a six-yard quarterback keeper by Greg Watson.

Two-minute drill

Omar Sanchez rushed for 201 yards and one touchdown in 21 carries and Arleta controlled the ball for more than 17 minutes in the second half to defeat Franklin, 31-8, in the City Invitational final. . . . Robert Refsnyder’s four-yard touchdown run with 7:27 left broke a 21-21 tie and propelled Laguna Hills to a 28-21 victory over Mayfair in the Southern Division.
