Lester (7-3) made his most impressive start since pitching a no-hitter against Kansas City on May 19. He struck out eight, walked two and won his fourth decision in a row. New York lost for the fourth time in five games. Pettitte (9-6) lasted 4 2/3 innings as his six-game winning streak ended.

Oakland 3, at Chicago 2: Justin Duchscherer pitched seven solid innings, Jack Cust and Donnie Murphy homered and the Athletics stopped the White Sox’s seven-game winning streak. Javier Vazquez (7-7) took the loss despite pitching his first complete game in nearly a year, giving up four hits and striking out 10. Duchscherer (9-5), the major league leader with a 1.96 earned-run average, gave up five hits while striking out four and walking two.

Detroit 8, at Seattle 4: Justin Verlander threw six strong innings and Michael Hollimon hit his first major league home run. Matt Joyce, recalled Sunday from the minor leagues, had two doubles among his career-high four hits. Ivan Rodriguez added three runs batted in as the Tigers pounded out 15 hits. The hard-throwing Verlander gave up two runs and eight hits to win for the sixth time in seven career starts against Seattle. After starting the season in a slump, Verlander (5-9) hasn’t lost since June 6.

Kansas City 10, at Baltimore 7: Mark Grudzielanek had four hits and Joakim Soria worked a perfect ninth for his 23rd save for the Royals, who had lost nine of their last 10 at Camden Yards. David DeJesus singled in a run, matching his career-high hitting streak of 15 games. The Orioles became the last team in the majors to lose a game in which they scored at least six runs. Baltimore was 27-0 when scoring six runs or more.
