Roddick is upset at the Rogers Cup

Andy Roddick followed Roger Federer out of the Rogers Cup in Toronto.

The sixth-seeded Roddick was upset Thursday by 44th-ranked Marin Cilic, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.

“His aggressiveness is what won him that match today,” Roddick said. “He took it to me a lot more than I took it to him.”

Defending champion Novak Djokovic advanced to the quarterfinals with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Robin Soderling, and second-seeded Rafael Nadal beat Igor Andreev, 6-2, 7-6 (1).

Gilles Simon, who upset the top-ranked Federer on Wednesday, advanced with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Jose Acasuso. Fourth-seeded Nikolay Davydenko also was upset, dropping a 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 decision to Nicolas Kiefer.

Weir is tied with two for lead at Canadian Open

Mike Weir gave Canadian Open fans what they came to see on another rainy day at drenched Glen Abbey in Oakville, Canada.

The Canadian star shot a bogey-free six-under-par 65 for a share of the lead with Anthony Kim and Eric Axley during the suspended first round. Only half of the players were able to finish the round, which was delayed for 5 hours 42 minutes.

Richard Johnson, J.P. Hayes, Nicholas Thompson, Ryan Armour and Jason Allred shot 67s on the course saturated by eight inches of rain in six days.

Lorena Ochoa shot a seven-under-par 65 to take a one-stroke lead after the first round of the Evian Masters in France.

Ahn Sun-ju, Candie Kung and Angela Park are one shot behind.

Four days after he tied for third place at the British Open, Greg Norman labored to a four-over 75 in the opening round of the Seniors British Open at Troon, Scotland. He is seven shots behind co-leaders Bruce Vaughan and Eduardo Romero.

Boldin says Cardinals lied to him and he won’t re-sign

Arizona wide receiver Anquan Boldin says the Cardinals lied to him about a new contract and that he has no desire to re-sign with the organization. Boldin, a two-time Pro Bowl player and a team captain last season, said that he was promised a new contract before this season, and has directed his agent to stop negotiations with the team.

“Right now I don’t want a deal,” he said. “You may think I’m funny or saying that just to say it, but for me, I’m tired of it. I washed my hands of the whole situation.”

Boldin has three years left on the four-year, $22.75-million contract extension he signed after the 2005 season that keeps him under contract through 2010.

Cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha officially signed his $9.765-million franchise player tender offer and joined the Oakland Raiders in time for their first training camp practice, while running back LaMont Jordan has been told to stay away from the team.

Jordan is scheduled to make $4.7 million this year and $5 million next season but has no role with the Raiders after the team drafted Darren McFadden.

Wide receiver David Tyree was put on the physically unable to perform list by the New York Giants because of lingering problems recovering from right knee surgery.

Denver Broncos wide receiver Rod Smith is retiring. Smith, 38, has been on the reserve/retired list since February and has had two hip operations in the last year and a half.

The New England Patriots signed linebacker Jerod Mayo, the 10th overall pick in the draft, to a five-year deal. Other first-round picks who signed: cornerback Antoine Cason with San Diego and defensive lineman Kentwan Balmer with San Francisco.

Washington Redskins rookie receiver Devin Thomas probably will miss the team’s first exhibition after pulling his right hamstring.

Former classmates of Donaghy are sentenced

Two former high school classmates of disgraced NBA referee Tim Donaghy were both sentenced to more than a year in prison for their roles in a betting scandal that embarrassed the league. A federal judge in Brooklyn, N.Y., gave James Battista, a professional gambler and admitted drug addict, 15 months in prison for making bets based on inside tips. Thomas Martino, the scheme’s middleman, was sentenced to a year and one day for paying the referee thousands of dollars for the tips.

The Golden State Warriors re-signed guard Monta Ellis to a six-year deal worth about $66 million.

The Nuggets signed Chris Andersen, bringing the forward-center back to Denver after three seasons with New Orleans. Andersen was reinstated by the NBA in early March after being kicked out on Jan. 27, 2006, for violating the league’s drug policy.

Former Minnesota Vikings defensive lineman Darrion Scott received a two-year stayed sentence for putting a plastic bag over his 2-year-old son’s head. Scott, who was also fined $200, pleaded guilty earlier this month to child endangerment and called his actions “stupid and reckless.”

Scott said he put the plastic bag over his son’s head to show the boy there was nothing to fear.

Christina Loukas defended her one-meter title at the U.S. national diving championships at the Rose Bowl Aquatics Center in Pasadena. Loukas won with 264.80 points, edging her synchronized diving partner Amanda Miller, who finished second with 259.65 points.
