The Charlotte Bobcats wanted to load up on draft picks. The Denver Nuggets were happy to sit out the draft.

The Nuggets traded the 20th pick to the Bobcats on Wednesday in exchange for a future, protected first-round pick. The Bobcats, who also hold the ninth pick, may now get a chance to address needs at center and point guard.

The Nuggets will have no picks today because they had already traded their second-round choice to Seattle.

Denver will get Charlotte’s first-round pick next season if the Bobcats make the playoffs. If they don’t, Charlotte keeps it. Charlotte would have no protection for the pick in 2014.

A federal judge cast doubt on the NBA’s demand that disgraced referee Tim Donaghy pay nearly $1.4 million in restitution, saying he might not have to foot the $516,971 bill for an internal review of refereeing done after the gambling scandal.

Judge Carol Amon, at a hearing in Brooklyn, ordered the NBA to produce more documents to support the claim before she makes a final decision on whether Donaghy must pay the $1.4 million, which includes wages of $504,719 for the offending seasons, as part of his punishment when he is sentenced July 14.
