No. 1 North Carolina 84, at UC Santa Barbara 67: Tyler Hansbrough had 13 points in his season debut, and the Tar Heels easily defeated the Gauchos in front of a sellout crowd of 6,000. Hansbrough, last season’s national player of the year, sat out the first two games for North Carolina (3-0) because of a stress reaction in his right shin. James Nunnally scored a career-high 19 points off the bench for Santa Barbara (1-2). The last time the Gauchos played host to a No. 1 team was in 1991, when they lost, 76-55, to defending national champion Nevada Las Vegas.

No. 8 Notre Dame 65, at Loyola Marymount 54: Luke Harangody had 27 points and 17 rebounds as the Fighting Irish (2-0) held on after leading by only three points with seven minutes remaining. Freshman Jarred DuBois led Loyola Marymount (0-4) with 16 points. First-year Lions Coach Bill Bayno missed the game because of an illness that had caused him to miss practices the last couple of days. Assistant Max Good filled in.

Oregon 84, at UC Irvine 77: Junior guard Tajuan Porter scored 23 points to lead the Ducks (2-1) past the Anteaters (0-3) at the Bren Center. Porter made all 12 of his free-throw attempts. UC Irvine senior forward Kevin Bland led all scorers with a career-high 26 points, making 12 of 14 shots.

at New Mexico State 90, Pepperdine 66: Jahmar Young scored 21 points and Wendell McKines had six of his 18 points during a 16-2 second-half run, leading the Aggies (2-1) past the Waves (1-3) at Las Cruces. Taylor Darby led Pepperdine with 12 points.

at Cal State Bakersfield 67, Cal State Northridge 65: Donavan Bragg made a layup and the ensuing free throw with 11 seconds remaining, giving the Roadrunners (1-2) a victory over the Matadors (1-2).
