Fire is contained but smoke lingers

A brush fire that burned more than 1,000 acres at the Marine Corps base was contained Thursday, but smoke hung over Southern California much of the day.

Brian Humphrey, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Fire Department, said emergency dispatchers received hundreds of phone calls from residents reporting the smell of smoke. Firefighters believe the smoke drifted offshore overnight and was being swept back to land.

The South Coast Air Quality Management District issued a smoke advisory for areas affected by smoke, urging residents to avoid unnecessary outdoor activities.

No structures were damaged in the blaze, which broke out late Wednesday in a remote area where Marines are trained in ordnance disposal. No cause has been determined. A break in weather and wind direction aided firefighting efforts.
