For Weis, win is an ugly blowout

From Pop Warner to the NFL, football players are taught to “stay alert” on the sideline because anything can happen at any time. Evidently, Notre Dame Coach Charlie Weis never learned this lesson.

During the second quarter of Notre Dame’s 35-17 victory over Michigan on Saturday, Weis suffered major injuries to his left knee when Irish defensive end John Ryan was blocked into him during a punt return.

“I feel like an athlete. First time in my life,” said Weis, who sustained tears to his anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments.

“I never saw it coming,” he added. “I just knew as soon as I was hit.”

Weis, who returned to the sideline for the second half on crutches and with his leg wrapped, said he’ll have surgery on his knee this week and will not miss Notre Dame’s next game, at Michigan State on Saturday.

So what else is new?

The Ducks improved to 3-0 with a 32-26 double overtime victory at Purdue but lost starting quarterback Justin Roper, who suffered a sprained left knee in the first overtime.

Roper is expected to be sidelined at least two weeks and joins projected starter Nate Costa, who suffered a season-ending knee injury in training camp.

Oregon Coach Mike Bellotti said freshman Chris Harper, who directed Oregon to the game-winning touchdown in the second overtime, and sophomore Jeremiah Masoli will fill in for Roper.

Other key injuries Saturday:

Maryland running back Da’Rel Scott (shoulder).

Louisiana State linebacker Darry Beckwith (knee).

A rundown of how several highly rated players performed Saturday:

Texas Tech wide receiver Michael Crabtree: In the Red Raiders’ 43-7 win over Southern Methodist, Crabtree dominated with eight catches for 164 yards and three touchdowns.

Clemson quarterback Cullen Harper: In the Tigers’ 27-9 victory over North Carolina State, Harper opened the game by having an interception returned for a touchdown. But he bounced back to finish having completed 20 of 28 passes for 262 yards and two touchdowns.

NFL cold list

Purdue quarterback Curtis Painter: After helping the Boilermakers take a 17-point lead against Oregon, Painter failed to get it done down the stretch in the Ducks’ 32-26 double-overtime victory. Painter finished having completed 26 of 50 passes for 207 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions.

Iowa tight end Tony Moeaki: At 6 feet 4, 255 pounds, Moeaki had a solid blocking game in the Hawkeyes’ 17-5 win over Iowa State. But he was not much of a factor as a receiver with just one catch for four yards.

Ohio State offensive tackle Alex Boone: The Buckeyes’ veteran starter looked very shaky against USC’s defensive front. Not only did Boone pick up ill-advised penalties, he failed to step up in a big game.

Record breakers

In his first career start, Ohio quarterback Boo Jackson established a school record with 413 total yards, but it wasn’t enough in the Bobcats’ 31-28 loss to Central Michigan. Jackson completed 17 of 31 passes for 365 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for 48 yards. But he also lost two fumbles in the fourth quarter.

In Missouri’s 69-17 victory over Nevada, Chase Daniel completed 23 of 28 passes and threw for four touchdowns to set a school record for single-game accuracy with at least 20 attempts. Daniel also passed for 405 yards to give him 9,153 career yards passing, which breaks Brad Smith’s career passing record of 8,799. The Tigers’ 69 points tied a school single-game record and their 519 total yards passing also broke a school single-game record.
